2027 in one paragraph
CEO Keith Stein told Marketplace in August the league will play in its four home cities in 2027 (“I’m pretty sure”) and will “likely” be “a six-team league,” possibly eight (Marketplace). Commissioner Justine Siegal told The IX Sports she is “very confident” the league returns, and that every player became a free agent when the season ended (The IX Sports). No schedule, venues, expansion cities or tryout dates are announced yet. Details and sources: WPBL 2027: what we know.

New to the WPBL?
It’s professional baseball, not softball — ESPN describes it as the first professional baseball league for women in the U.S. since the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League ended in 1954. In 2026, four teams each played 15 regular-season games from Aug. 1 to Sept. 6, all at Robin Roberts Stadium in Springfield, Illinois, then playoffs.
